Coming Out of the Spam Queue

We’ve all been there. TU has our email addresses, and regularly enough, we receive the newsletter. It’s right next to the newsletter from all of our favorite brands, bands, newstands, and political demands. Daily, it’s a lot to deal with. We’ve got noise and signal, and it becomes almost impossible to distinguish the two. I’m read more …

Marketing and perhaps a bit of PokemonGo

Let’s think of the last fishing advertisements you’ve seen. What did it look like? I think there are only two or three anyway… so let’s be specific.  First you have the NASCAR type. These generally target the gear-side of the industry. Musically, we’ve probably got some lightly distorted electric guitar riffs. Visually, we’ve got short read more …

Some Thoughts – #600years

I stopped by my parents’ house the other day, and the latest copy of the ‘Feather-Craft’ catalog was waiting for my perusal. It’s rare that I order anything from these catalogs, but it is fun to take a look at the toys. Talking about art is like dancing about architecture, is like comparing fly rods read more …

The Open Fly Podcast – A Eulogy

In the course of writing reviews for my favorite podcasts, I came across a blurb from Evan of “The Open Fly” podcast. It was titled, “Stick a Fork in Us, We’re Done.” Above the title stood a symbolic equation; the equation’s right hand showing a cartoonish fork driven into the ‘Open Fly’ logo. The Open read more …

“Independent” Shale Research Earmarked In PA Financial Code (again…)

Sitting in my car the other day, I heard an interesting radio story. NPR (90.5 WESA, for fellow Pittsburghers) briefly discussed another dubius earmark included in the PA budget (specifically the accompanying legislation, ‘the fiscal code’) setting aside $150k for independent Marcellus Shale research. The news piece briefly discussed that the group in question, SAFER read more …

Montour Run – Because Thomas Asked For It…

The other day, I had an opportunity to visit Montour Run… a small silty stream near Robinson, PA that the PFBC stocks withh rainbows each spring and fall. I’m often conflicted about these streams. Montour Run in particular doesn’t stand a snowman’s chance in hades of holding fish through the summer, and it seems cruel read more …

An Unnecessary Trophy Case

"Blackadore is within a protected zone as part of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. To propose development of a marine protected zone is ludicrous. This not only has local implications, it has national implications. If the Blackadore development is approved, this sets a dangerous precedent that calls into question the safety of other protected areas, and thus the future of the flats fishery throughout Belize."

Isopropanol… It’s What’s for Dinner (Potter County, PA)

Well, that might be the case if you live in PA’s Potter County anyway… Last week, I wrote a few sentences about PAFBC settlements with fracking companies; notably the Dunkard Creek fish kill (‘allegedly‘) attributable to Murray Energy. As a result, I’ve been a little more ‘tuned into’ the environmental side of things, and happened read more …
